Te Wheoro Redoubt

Te Wheoro Redoubt is named after Wiremu Te Wheoro, one key Maori ally of the British - who after the war became one of the Government’s fiercest critics. The Ngāti Naho chief Te Wheoro had opposed the idea of war between Kīngitanga and the Crown, and during the War aligned himself with the crown. This land had originally been part of the defences at Rangiriri, however Te Wheoro occupied it on behalf of the Crown in 1868 and 1869 when it was thought war may break out again. You can see the site of the Rangiriri Pā from the top of the Redoubt.

In this video series looking at the New Zealand Land Wars, we aim to present the places as they are . We understand that it is not possible to tell the many complex stories of a location with one video, rather we want to make these places available to be visited virtually.
